CN5 - Trigeminal Flashcards
1
Q
Structures assessed in OME
A
Jaw and facial sensation
2
Q
What does it control?
A
Sensation in the face and anterior 2/3 of the tongue
3
Q
Impairment
A
- Causes issues in oral and prepatory stage, due to poor mastication and poor stabilisation of mouth floor
- causes decreased hyolaryngeal excursion during pharyngeal phase
4
Q
Potential implications - jaw
A
- inadequate bolus breakdown
- impaired preparation of bolus formations (semi solids)
- decreased UES opening resulting in potential for post swallow penetration/aspiration
5
Q
Potential implications - sensory
A
- decreased bolus recognition/awareness with inadequate bolus formation and preparation, post swallow residue
- contribution to delayed pharyngeal response with consequent pre swallow or intra-swallow penetration/aspiration
