lecture 3 - physical, motor and cognitive development in infancy (0-2 years) Flashcards
cephalocaudal pattern
sequence in which the earliest group always occurs at the top, with physical growth and differentiation of features gradually working their way to the bottom
proximodistal pattern
sequance in which group starts at centre of the body moves towards the extremities
neurons
a nerve cell that handles information processing
synapses
the junction across which a nerve impulses passes from an axon terminal to another neuron
myelination
the process whereby the axons of the neuron cells are insulated with fat cells
synpatic pruning
neural connections and pathways that are not used or stimulated are weakened and eventually die off
Rem sleep
eyes flutter beneath closed lids
perception
interpretation of what is sensed
senses or sensation
occurs when information interacts with sensory receptors
object permanence
understanding that objects and events continue to exist
motor development
process of change in movement as well as the interacting factors the individual, environment and task that drive these changes
reflex
involuntary movements the body makes in response to a stimulus
