lecture 3 - perception Flashcards
what is the direct perception theory?
bottom-up processing, perception comes from stimuli in the environment, parts identified and put together
what is constructive perception theory?
top-down processing, processing originates in the brain, people actively construct perceptions based on expectations
what is top-down processing?
starts in the brain, persons knowledge, experience and expectations
what is bottom-up processing?
starts with the senses, incoming raw data, energy is registered on the receptors
how is pain perceived?
bottom up process - direct pathway from the skin to the brain depending on the stimulation of receptors when cells are damaged
how is language processed?
top down
what are Gestalts principles?
There are intrinsic laws which guide our environment - we need to learn rules of perception of the world - need to discover a set of truths as to what object looks like and how they behave
what are Gestalts principles?
figure ground, good continuation - overlapping objects, law of Pragnanz - see overlapping objects as complex shapes, similarity - grouped together in some way,
what are Gestalts principles of perceptual organization?
Perception is determined by specific organizing principles, not just lightwaves activating the retina.
Perceptual organization is a feature of the stimulus (bottom up)
Role of experience is minor compared to these intrinsic, “built in” principles.
Experience can influence perception but is not the key driver.
what is the principle of neural representation?
everything a person experiences is based on representations in the persons nervous system
how do we know what is a colour and what is a sound?
feature detectors
what are challenges of computer vision?
computers cant compute the contrast of pixels that neighbour each other, they cant interpolate missing parts e.g. if there is a pic of a colosseum it cant interpret that it is not a pic and thinks its the real thing
