What does PICO stand for?
P = patient or population I = intervention or indicator C = comparison O = outcome
What are benefits of using PICO?
- Development of search terms and synonyms
- Helps identify the clinical questions type (eg treatment vs prognosis) and refining it (eg Drug X or Drug Y, placebo/no treatment)
- Assists in identifying the better matching ‘hits’ in your search that match your clinical question
- More accurate application of study results back to your clinical case
When should you not use the Cochrane Library?
- General healthcare questions (casual, prognosis, epidemiology)
- Statistics (prevalence and incidence)
- Primary research other than RCTs
- Guidelines
