Lecture 3 Flashcards
what is the scientific methid?
an unbiased approach used to examine the interaction of food, nutrients, and health
-used to answer questions
what are the 2 types of evaluative studies?
- experimental
2. observational
what is an observational study?
examines relationship between food/nutrients and health outcomes without researchers changing who is or isn’t exposed to it
what is an experimental sutdy?
can determine a cause and effect relationship between food/nutrients and health outcomes
what is a randomized controlled trial (RCT)? -experimental study
- part of an experimental study
- people are randomly assigned to one of two or more groups
- one group receives the intervention while the other group receives a placebo
- the researchers study what happens to each group. when there is a control group, the difference in outcomes can actually be linked to the intervention
what is a cohort study?- observational study
- a cohort is a group of people linked in some way
- researchers compare what happens to people in the cohort that have been exposed to a particular food/nutrient to what happens to people who haven’t been exposed
- a limitation of cohort studies is confounding influences
Things to consider when you find literature on a topic
- a single study
- expert opinion as a short cut
- cherry picking
- conflicts of interest
What are conflicts of interest and when do they occur?
- when food industry is sponsoring research
- researchers may feel obligated to interpret their studies in a more positive light
- researcher may run analysis in a way to find certain result
Registered Dieticians
- all RDs are members of the College of Dieticians of Ontario
- registered dietician, professional dietician, and dietician and titles protected by law
- anyone can call themselves a nutritionist
what are the 4 sources of credible information?
- peer reviewed articles
- grey literature (reports)
- textbook
- credible websites
