lecture 3 Flashcards
An integral part of the research process is the dissemination of results
Information resources
Traditionally published information has been categorized as primary and secondary sources
Information resources
must be the first disclosure containing sufficient information to enable peers to assess observations, repeat experiments and to evaluate intellectual processes
Primary source
includes most books, review articles, and indexes to the literature, and usually summarize, reviews or organize information
Secondary source
dental textbooks are what type of source
Secondary
is a measure of a particular journal’s impact based on how often that journal’s articles are cited
Impact Factor (IF)
citations in year/ total # articles published past 2 y
Impact Factor (IF)
what are the steps of conducting a search
- Defining the question.
- Choosing a resource.
- Keyword searching vs. classification systems.
- Search techniques.
Depending on the question we will choose specific books, journals, indexes
Choosing a resource
the degree to which the results of a study are likely to approximate to the ‘truth’
Internal validity
the extent to which the effects observed are applicable to a broader population
External validity (generalizability)
inference can only correctly be made to the population from which the sample was drawn
External validity (generalizability)
we often leap to inference far beyond the targeted population
External validity (generalizability)
