Lecture 3-4 Endosymbiotic origin of organelles Flashcards

Q

Endosymbiotic origin of organelles

A

Endosymbiotic theory posits that plastids and mitochondria were once free-living prokaryotes and became organelles of eukaryotic cells. The theory started with plastids [1] and was further developed for mitochondria [2]. … Important evidence in support of endosymbiotic theory comes from organelle genomes.

Q
  1. Endosymbiotic Hypothesis
    a. Origin: original prokaryotic host cell, multiple invaginations of the plasma membrane, aerobic bacteria got engulphed by plasma membrane, bacteria became mitochondria perhaps the cell enzymes didn’t recognize mitochondria, and kept it alive, evolutionary standpoint it benefitted the cell (additional ATP generation)
    i. Eukaryotic cells animals, fungi, some protist
    b. Photosynthetic bacteria became chloroplasts
    c. Eukaryotic cell plants some protists
