Lecture 3 Flashcards
What is parts per million?
-Equivalent to 1 milligram per Liter
What is molar concentration (M)?
- Is the amount of moles divided by the amount of Liters in the solution
- Also known as Molarity
What is a Normal solution (N)?
-Contains 1gram equivalent weight divided by Liter of solution
What is a mole fraction?
The ratio of moles of a given solute to the total number of moles of all components in the solution
What is part per billion?
-Equivalent to micrograms
What is parts per trillion?
-Equivalent to nanograms
What is chemical equilibrium?
- Reactants and products concentration have no further tendency to change over time.
- Forward is at the same rate as reverse reaction
What is pH?
(-) log [H+]
What is Pksp?
(-) log [Ksp]
What is unsaturated solution?
- A solution cans still dissolve more solute
- has not reached limit
What Saturated Solution?
-No more solute will dissolve in the solvent
What Solubility product?
-Used to describe saturated solution of an ionic compound of relatively low solubility
What is the saturation?
-Measure how does mineral water system is to equilibrium
What saturation index?
-SI = log (IAP/ksp)
What are the measurements for IAP?
- IAP = ksp SI = 0 water is saturated
- IAP < ksp SI < 0 watet is unsaturated
- IAP > ksp SI > 0 water is supersaturated
What is Volatile?
-Substance is easily evaporated at normal temperature
What is TSS?
- Total Suspended Solid
- particles that cannot pass through 2 Norco filter
What is TDS?
- Total Dissolved Solid
- will pass through 2mircron filter
- consists of Ca, Sulfur, chlorides, nitrate, and iron.
What is VSS?
- Fixed and suspended Volatile Suspended Solid
- Mass of suspended solids lost after heating to 550C
Why is sampling protocol important?
- Check efficiency
- To follow with regulations checks
What is SAP?
-Sampling analysis Plan
