Lecture 1 Flashcards
What are Relevant Regulation for Wastewater?
- Clean Water Act:
- ->NPDES permit (National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System)
- ->TMDL (Total Maximum Daily Load) - a comprehensive watershed-based water quality management
- CWA
What TMDL?
- Total Maximum Daily Load
- Max. amount of pollutant that a body of water can receive and still meet water quality standards
What are the sources of water?
- Domestic wastewater
- Industrial wastewater
- Infiltration/inflow
- Stormwater
What are the types of wastewater collection systems?
- Sanitary Wastewater collection
- Storm water collection
- Combined wastewater and storm drain collection system
What is the mass balance equation for reactive solutes?
- d(M)/dt = d(in)/dt - d(out)/dt )
- ->not used for chemical or biological reactions
- d(M)/dt = d(in)/dt - d(out)/dt +/-r
What are reaction kinetics?
-Time dependent reactions
What is a point source?
- Are very specific, confirmed origin
- ex. Is factory drainage pipe
What is a non-point source?
- runoff of sediment, fertilizers, pesticides, and herbicides
What is the CWA?
- Clean Water Act
- established the National Pollutant Discharge Elimination system (NPDES)
What is NPDES?
- National Pollutant Discharge Elimination system
- Program based on uniform technologies minimum standard for each discharged
What are the treatment process?
- physical
- chemical
- thermal
- biological
What is removed in a municipal treatment?
- BOD
- SS
- pathogens
- nutrients
What is the process analysis?
- Treatment uses Chem, Bio, or physical
- mass balance used to tell of flow pattern
