Lecture 3 Flashcards
What is cement
a powdery substance made with calcined lime and clay
what is portland cement
cememnt that is manufactured from limestone and clay that hardens underwater, from the isle of portland in the uk. Fathered by joseph aspdin
In calcination
you heat material to a high temperature without fusing to drive off volatile matter
Types of portland cement fall under
ASTM C-150
Types of portland hydraulic cement
GU,HE,MS,HS,MH,LH
general use
high early strength
moderate sulphate resistance
high sulfate resistance
moderate heat of hydration
low heat of hydration
PORTLAND TYPE I
most commonly used, moderate properties
Portland type II
moderate exposure to sulphate attack, gains strength slower than type I but has same ultimate strength
reduced temp cracking so pour in warm weather
lower permeability so lowed water to cement ratio
