What does personality refer to?
enduring patterns of thought, feeling, motivation and behaviour that are expressed in different circumstances
What is the aim of personality research?
- construct general theories that describe the structure of personality
- assess individual differences in personality (way people vary) and similarities
What is ambivalence (cognitive dissonance)?
Conflicting feelings or motives
What does conflict occur between?
different aspects of consciousness- opposing motives
What is compromise formation? What is it required for?
Solutions that maximise fulfilment of conflicting motives at same time, required for successful resolution of conflict
What is one’s personality?
everything about you, what makes you unique, shapes how and what motives you, your behaviour, type of person you are
What two drives/instincts did Freud suggest human behaviour is motivated by? Who was his work based on?
Aggressive Drive, Sexual (libido) Drive

What is libido?
Pleasure-seeking, sensuality, love, desire for intercourse
What are defence mechanisms?
unconscious mental processes that protect conscious person from unpleasant emotions
