LECTURE 3 Flashcards
1
Q
vulnerability
A
a weakness that could be affected by a disaster (or how badly it could be affected)
2
Q
risk
A
probability that any given hazardous event might occur and the chance of potential loss
hazard x vulnerability = risk
= probability
- chance of X happening
- humans have a flawed perception of risk
- much higher risk of death by car than earthquake
3
Q
population growth
A
930 years from now, 529 trillion humans would stand shoulder to shoulder on the continents
- seems to be slowing
- “only” linear 1 billion more per 13 years
4
Q
carrying capacity
A
= the population that can be sustainably supported within a given domain
depends on:
- quantity of food
- habitat (living space)
- resources
relation to disasters
- more people = more infrastructure = more vulnerable
= less likely to be saved
5
Q
is earth fragile?
A
no
disasters are natural
human population is fragile
