Lecture 29 Flashcards
1
Q
Define melting point
A
The temperature that occurs when the melting rate equals the freezing rate
2
Q
Why do some substances sublime rather than melt
A
Because the intermolecular attractions are not great enough to keep the molecules near each other when they leave the solid state
3
Q
What is the critical point and supercritical fluid
A
Where the l-g line terminates, the vapour cannot be liquified— this states is called supercritical fluid
4
Q
What happens at the critical point
A
The two densities of liquid & vapour are equal and the phase boundary disappears. The KE is so high that the vapour cannot be condensed
5
Q
What are normal atmospheric conditions
A
Pressure = 1 atm
