Lecture 27 - Beta Oxidation of Fatty Acids Flashcards
What are the stages of Beta oxidation of fatty acids
Activation
Transport
Oxidation
What is in the activation stage
Attached to COENZYME A
To form –
Acyl-CoA
Occurs at the outer surface of the mitochondria
Catalysed by Acyl-CoA synthetase
RCOO- + CoA + ATP <—> ACYL-CoA +AMP + PPi
Reaction is driven to the right by removal of a product
Where is the removed product from activation transported to
Mitochodria
What occurs in the transport section
Acyl group becomes attached in place of hydroxyl and releases Coenzyme A
What occurs in the oxidation phase
2 carbon unit is removed by a four step process
Process repeats if fatty acid is still 4 or more carbons long
(slide 16)
what are the 4 steps in the oxidation phase breaking down eg. a 16 carbon fatty acid
Oxidation
Hydration
Oxidation
Thiolytic cleavage
