Lecture 23 - Structure of Lipids Flashcards
What is the main division in lipids
Complex lipids, simple lipids
What are complex lipids
Built up of many components that form a lipid
major part made of fatty acids
eg. phospholipids
What are simple lipids
small proportion of total lipids, molecules that form specific functions made up of from small components into a particular structure
eg. Cholesterol, porstacyclin
What is a fatty acid structure
R1 (long chain hydrocarbon) -COOH
SLIDE 6
How do you name fatty acids
Number of carbons in chain (in latin)
With “-oic acid” or “-oate” if ionised form
eg. cis-9-hexadecanoate
What are the two most common saturated fatty acids
Palmitic acid (C16)
Stearic acid (C18)
How does short hand in fatty acids work
eg. C16:0
16 carbons - no double bonds
C20:4 delta: 5,8,11,14
4 double bonds in positions 5,8,11,14
What happens to the melting point with the introduction of a double bond
Shifts downwards
What are acyls
Fatty acid part of a larger molecule
SLIDE 12
what affects do double bonds have on adjacent chains
less interaction hence lower MP
How do amphipathic molecules act around water
Attraction and repulsion
forms micelles
What are some examples of amphipathic molecule uses
Liposomes
Why are triacylglycerols so good at storage of energy
Not amphipathic but pack so closely to exclude water
