What are the details of the HTA (Scotland) 2006
– Prior to approaching relatives ODR must be checked.
– If no entry on ODR approach nearest relative. Establish whether pt carried donor card or expressed wish to donate.
– Where no authorisation by the adult exists, nearest relative may authorise removal of organs/tissues for transplantation.
– Authorisation for transplant cannot be withdrawn.
– Nearest relative can extend authorisation for transplant to include research, education, training or audit.

– Kidney – Liver – Heart – Lung – Pancreas – Small bowel
How do you confirm brain stem death in an organ donor
– Irreversible brain damage – Exclude reversible causes – Exclude depressant drugs – Core temperature >34°C – Exclude metabolic, circulatory and endocrine disorders – Exclude reversible causes of apnoea

– These are a group of patients for whom death is inevitable but they do not fulfil brainstem dead criteria.
