Lecture 25: Network integration Flashcards
What are the main excitatory neurotransmitters?
- cause depolarisation = EPSP’s (excitatory post-synaptic potential)
=Acetylcholine Ach - at the nerve & muscle
= Glutamate - brain
What are the inhibitory neurotransmitters?
- cause hyperpolarisation = IPSP’s (inhibitory post-synaptic potential)
= GABA - brain
What is summation?
when local potentials add together at the axon hillock and result in an AP being initiated and transmitted down the axon hillock
What are the two types of summation?
Spatial summation - lots of axon at the same time
Temporal summation - one axon fires frequently
What is temporal summation?
Occurs when ONE axon terminal stimulates the post-synaptic membrane MULTIPLE TIMES and rapidly
-frequency of AP
What is spatial summation?
Occurs when SEVERAL axon terminals stimulate the post-synaptic membrane at the SAME TIME
What happens in the convergence neural network?
Info from different points converges to excite a single point
- redundancy and control points
What happens in the divergence neural network?
Info from a single point diverges - amplified
- single point amplification and control points
