Lecture 19: Structure and layout of the spinal cord Flashcards
What is grey matter?
CNS
cell bodies & unmyelinated axon
What is white matter?
CNS
myelinated axon
Where are cell bodies of sensory neurons located?
- dorsal root ganglion
What part of the spinal cord does somatic efferent information leave from?
ventral horns via ventral roots
What part of the spinal cord does autonomic efferent information leave from?
lateral horns via ventral roots
What part of the spinal cord does sensory afferent information enter through?
- dorsal horns via dorsal roots
Spinal nerves are mixed nerves meaning they contain both:
- sensory and motor neurons
What do spinal nerves branch off and form?
-ventral & dorsal ramus
In PNS what surrounds axon?
endoneurium
Axons in PNS are bundled together to form fascicles which are surrounded by :
perineurium
What surrounds the outside of a nerve?
epineurium
Where are cell bodies of motor neurons located?
ventral root ganglion
Where does the spinal cord begin?
- foramen magnum
Where does the spinal cord end?
- L1/L2 lumbar level
What is the filum terminale?
- extends from conus medularis to the end of the spinal cavity
- it anchors the spinal cord
