Lecture 21: Layout of the brain Flashcards
What is the function of the frontal lobe?
Movement
What is the function of the occipital lobe?
Vision
What is the function of the parietal lobe?
Sensory
What is the function of the temporal lobe?
Memory & hearing
The frontal lobe is divided into 3 sections which are?
- prefrontal cortex
- Motor cortex
- pre-central gyrus / primary motor cortex
What does the pre-frontal cortex do?
- planning of movement
What does the motor cortex do?
control of voluntary movement
What does the primary motor cortex / prefrontal gyrus do?
- execution of movement
Where is the somatosensory cortex located?
post central gyrus in parietal lobe
What is the function of the somatosensory cortex?
- identification and localisation of sensory stimulus
- sensory & sensation
What makes up the brain stem?
- Medulla
- Pons
- Midbrain
The brainstem is the lower extension of the brain and connects the _________ to the spinal cord?
cerebrum
What is the function of the brain stem?
- sensory, motor and reflex functions
- relays info from the spinal cord & P nerves to the brain
What is the function of the basal ganglia?
- selects, initiates and terminates appropriate movement
What is the function of the cerebellum?
Coordinates movement by comparing a copy of instructions from the motor cortex to sensory feedback of actual movement
- ensures selected movement is coordinated - guided by sensory feedback - compares intention with result
