Lecture 22 - Renal Histology Flashcards
1
Q
What are the histological characteristics of Bowman’s capsule?
L22 S15
A
Parietal layer:
-layer of simple squamous epithelium that is continuous with proximal convoluted tubule
Visceral layer:
-podocytes in contact with endothelium of glomerular capillaries
Bowman’s space:
- space located between parietal and visceral layers
- continuous with lumen of proximal convoluted tubule
2
Q
What are the functions of the mesangial cells?
L22 S19
A
- contract to modify blood flow to capillaries
- phagocytize old basal lamina and immmunoglobulins
- synthesize collagen matrix
- secrete prostaglandins and endothelins
- respond to angiotensin II
3
Q
What are the components of the juxtaglomerular apparatus and what are their functions?
L22 S22
A
Macula densa:
- responds to urine concentration or hypotension
- signal renin release from juxtaglomerular cells
Juxtaglomerular cells:
- smooth muscle cells associated with afferent arteriole
- secrete renin
Extraglomerular mesangial cells:
-located between afferent and efferent arterioles
4
Q
What are the components of the renal filtration barrier?
L22 S30
A
Components:
- fenestrated endothelium of glomerular capillaries
- fused basal lamina
- filtration slits of podocytes
