what SDGs are relevant to food choice and security?
SDG 2 - zero hunger and connections to gender equality, reduced inequalities, life on land, climate action
what are the goals of zero hunger?
- end hunger
- achieve food security
- improve nutrition
- sustainable agriculture
what determines food choices/purchases?
individual, sociocultural, community, agriculture/industry, government and global influences
e.g. personal preference, cultural norms, food availability at stores, food distribution, government priorities, international food standards etc
what are some cultural influences on food choice?
kosher, halal, hinduism, vegetarianism
- settings
- diet and quantity
- family/whanau traditions
- structure of family
- expectations around food and sharing
- contributing to family/religious/cultural events
what is food security vs insecurity?
- food security exists when all people, at all times, have physical and economic access to sufficient, safe and nutritious food that meets their dietary needs and food preferences for an active and healthy life
- food insecurity is defined as a limited or uncertain availability of nutritionally adequate and safe food or limited ability to acquire personally acceptable foods that meet cultural needs in a socially acceptable way
what is the maori concept of food security?
food security is integral for Maori concepts such as mana, manaakitanga, mahinga kai and whakapapa
traditional kai is important for maori food security
- links to te tiriti and tino rangatiratanga
- food is taonga and resources that provide food (fisheries/forest/land) are also taonga
how can we find out about food security status in NZ?
NZ health survey/adult nutrition survey
- asks questions about food security
- eating properly/eat less due to money/food related stress etc
- but it lacks questions about cultural/lifestyle needs, focuses very much on financial
what are the food security results from the survey?
in 2015/16
- almost 1 in 5 children lived in a food-insecure household
- 19& of children lived in households experiencing severe-to-moderate food insecurity in 2015/16. a smaller proportion of children lived in households with severe food insecurity
- food insecurity more impacts maori and pacific children and families compared to non-maori
