Lecture 22 Flashcards
What kind of structure does a hepatocyte provide?
Filtration structure: takes out what it needs and adds what it has produced
What are AST and ALT involved in?
Enzymes involved in amino acid processing and gluconeogenesis
What are AST and ALT measured?
Bloodstream. Enzymes are inside the cell and getting released into the circulation as part of cell breakdown
What are GGT and ALP associated with?
Enzymes associated with portal triad
What do bilirubin levels reflect?
Injury or how liver processes bilirubin
What are the functional tests of the liver? Why?
Albumin: liver involved in making albumin
Prothrombin ratio: liver involved with coagulation factor production
Glucose: liver provides body with glucose between meals
What is the prothrombin ratio also called?
International Normalised Ratio
What results in an increase of AST and ALT release into bloodstream?
Inflammatory process affecting ventral part of lobule
E.g. viral hepatitis, liver toxins/drugs (high dose of paracetamol
What will lead to increase of GGT and ALP release into bloodstream?
Obstructive process that causes dilation of the biliary system
E.g. gallstones, some drugs
What leads to an increase of bilirubin in the blood?
Problem involving the processing of bilirubin
What is bilirubin a product of?
Haem
