What are some of the bacterial causes of infectious diarrhoea?
Campylobacter, salmonella, shigella, E. coli
What are the key routes of infection of campylobacter?
Undercooked poultry, poultry contact, contaminated drinking water
What are the symptoms of campylobacter infection?
Severe cramping abdominal pain, vomiting, diarrhoea
What are some of the complications of campylobacter?
Reactive arthritis, sepsis, Guillain-Barre syndrome
What are the names for infection with salmonella?
Enteric/typhoid fever
What are the symptoms of salmonella infection?
High fever, abdominal pain, constipation, chills, dry cough, anorexia, headache
What causes severe disease with infection with Shigella dysenteriae?
Production of the shiga toxin, which causes ulceration of the large bowel
