Lecture 21: Hemagiosarcoma Flashcards
What is the Primary location for hemangiosarcoma?
Spleen, right atrium, liver, skin, subcutis
HSA has rapid and widespread metastasis to:
liver
mesentery
lungs
Diagnosis of CBC:
- Anemia
- Mild to moderate thrombocytopenia
- May see schistocytes and/or acanthocytes
(T/F) Splenic masses should be removed and submitted for histopathology for definitive diagnosis
True
What is the *primary treatment( for most cases of HSA?
Surgery
- Make sure to correct hemodynamic abnormalities prior to surgery
What can 25% of dogs undergoing splenectomy for splenic masses develop?
Arrhythmias
- usually resolve within 24-48 hours
What type of hemangiosarcoma is an exception to adjuvant chemotherapy?
Dermal
What Dermal HSA patients do we stage?
- Non-predisposed breeds
- Invasive tumors
Ventral area is a good prognosis for
dermal HSA
Surgical excision + chemotherapy for HSA with:
Hypodermal extension
Be suspicious of HSA in any bloody mass that does
not ____________ well
exfoliate
Primary Bone HSA
- Staging - include abdominal ultrasound if HSA suspected or confirmed on histo
- +/- bone scan, full body CT if concern for metastatic lesion
- Immunohistochemistry may be required to distinguish from telangiectatic osteosarcoma
