Q

2 main reasons for angiosperms high diversity:

A

better water use efficiency (vessel elements)
reproductive symbioses (animal interactions)

15
Q

describe process of double fertilization

A

pollen grain adheres to the stigma
pollen tube cell grows into the style. the generative cell travels inside the pollen tube. it divides to form two sperm. the pollen tube penetrates an opening of the ovule called a micropyle. one of the sperm fertilizes the egg to form the diploid zygote. the other sperm fertilizes two polar nuclei to form the triploid endosperm which will become food for the embryo

17
Q

modification of carpel –>

A

different portions of the fruit (rind, flesh, core etc)

18
Q

aggregation/clustering of carpels –>

A

simple, multiple, aggregate, drupe etc

19
Q

what gave rise to carpel?

A

sporophylls folded inwards enclosing sporangia

20
Q

carpel includes:

A

ovary, style, stigma

21
Q

carpel vs pistil

A

pistil is whole structure, regardless of fusion
carpel is just one stigma, style, and ovary

pistils can have multiple carpels

22
Q

stigma

A

pollen reception
top of pistil
self-incompatibility recognition
talk between stigma and pollen

23
Q

style

A

supplies energy to grow pollen tubes
pollen tube compeition

24
Q

angiosperms grow pollen tube ___ than gymnosperms

A

WAAAAAY faster, like 100-1000x faster

25
Q

flower

A

determinant axis or branch for reproduction

petal, sepal can be modified for pollination

26
Q

fruit develops from the ___ and the seed develops from the ___

A

ovary, ovule

27
Q

wind vs animal pollinated flowers

A

wind: small, not brightly colored
animal: signals and rewards, color, pattern, scent, nectar

28
Q

seeds dispersed via:

A

wind
animal
water

29
Q

seeds requiring digestion to germinate:

A

require nutrients in poop to start seedling

30
Q

microgametophyte in gymno vs angio

A

gymno: 4 cells of pollen grain
angio: 2-3 cells of pollen grain

both germinate inside spore wall

31
Q

seeds in gymno vs angio

A

gymno: no enclosed, found on scales of cones
angio: enclosed inside ovary, and then fruit

32
Q

megagametophyte in gymno vs angio:

A

gymno: reduced compared to ferns, inside spore wall
angio: ultra reduced, only 7-8 cell embryo sac

33
Q

how many cotyledon in gymno vs angio?

A

gymno: many
angio: single (monocots)or a pair (dicots)

34
Q

ploidy of pollen grain

A

N

35
Q

ploidy of seed coat

A

2N

36
Q

ploidy of embryo

A

2N

37
Q

ploidy of nutritive tissue in angiosperms

A

3N

38
Q

if a flower is a modified branch, petals are modified

A

leaves

39
Q

seed plants evolved about ___ MYA

A

350

40
Q

angiosperms evolved about ___ MYA

A

150
