Lecture 21 Flashcards
Homoglycans
polysaccharides assembled from all the same sugar
Heteroglycans
polysaccharides assembled from different sugars
What are the different roles of carbohydrates
-energy and fuel for cells (glucose as immediate energy source) -energy storage for cells (polysaccharides, starch & glycan used for this) -structural elements in the cell (plant cell was, arthropod exoskeletons) -metabolic intermediates -part of backbone structure for nucleotides (polynucleotides)
Monosaccharide molecules
consist of two families: -aldoses-contain one aldehyde group and hydroxyl groups -ketoses-contain one ketone group and hydroxyl groups
L isomer
has the OH group on the Left
D isomer
Has the OH group on the right
