Lecture 20 - Qualitative Methods 2 Flashcards
What is thematic analysis
A method for identifying, analysing and reporting themes present in qualitative data
What is the inductive approach to thematic analysis
Bottom up
Data driven
Recording data without attempting to make it fit categories
What is the deductive approach to thematic analysis
Top down approach
Focused on analysis
What are the six phases of thematic analysis according to Braun & Clarke (2006)
Familiarising self with data
Generating initial codes
Searching for themes
Reviewing themes
Defining and naming themes
Producing the report
What does familiarising yourself with the data in thematic analysis involve?
First step
Transcribing data, immersing self and noting down initial ideas
What does generating initial codes consist of in thematic analysis
Step 2
Coding interesting features of the data in a systematic fashion , collating data relevant to each code
Coding can be semantic or latent (words used or inferring the meaning underneath)
What does searching for themes involve in thematic analysis
Step three
Collating codes into potential themes that capture the most salient pattern in the data
Creates a sort of table of these themes, subthemes etc
What does reviewing themes consist of in thematic analysis
Step four
Reviewing, do these themes make sense in relation to the coded transcripts, and wether everything fits into the themes they’ve been recorded under
