Lecture 19 - Qualitative Methods 1 Flashcards
When would we use qualitative research?
As a first look at an area of research
When the individuals interpretation and meaning is key
When we want rich data
Name three ways to conduct qualitative research
Interviews
Focus groups
Unstructured observation
What are the three types of interview
Structured Unstructured Semi structured (most common)
How are interviews analysed
They’re normally recorded and transcribed
What are three advantages of focus groups
Flexibility in exploring unanticipated areas
Good way to gather knowledge on areas people haven’t looked at before
Access to everyday ways of talking about topics
What are three disadvantages of focus groups
Transcribing is time consuming
Logistically difficult as need to recruit, organise, moderate and guide discussion
Can easily drift from topic and can be hard to bring back to central issues
What are mixed methods of research
Research that uses both quantitative and qualitative methods
Eg an interview after an experiment to explore feelings on what went on
What is purposive sampling
Selecting participants with the aim of exploring and expanding knowledge and gaining insight on a topic
What is data saturation
In qualitative research
It’s the point where no new ideas or themes are present in the data
