Building on the previous lecture on early communication, this lecture will explore later language development and the relevance of our three key themes.

Four different components of language which children learn

Children can decode language from early on. These abilities progress (complexity) and some desist (distinguishing between languages)

Universality of language suggests nature and nurture are essential to developing language The social environment and children themselves seem to play a role

General development through different stages/levels of language but individual differences are important
