Lecture 20 Digital Preservation Flashcards
How long does a popular file format last?
This depends on the package used, but it may not be long, especially if the data needs to be archived for a long period of time
What is preservation?
This is the action of preserving data from damage, decay or destruction
Can file formats be converted?
Yes file formats can be converted from an old format into a new format.
There may be problems in the future and there maybe some loss of fidelity
Eventually file formats may get too old and may not be able to be converted
Why should we preserve physical objects?
Some artefacts can be very precious and fragile & cannot be viewed by many people such as the early bible.
Storing on a computer means that many people have access to this
What is digitisation
This is the act of capturing a digital representation of a physical thing
Can be either temporal or non-temporal
What is DPI?
dots per inch
What methods are used for capturing 3-D artefacts?
Lasers can be used to create a 3-D model
3-D models allow virtual viewers to rotate and suspect the artefact in detail
How can we capture the feel of 3-D objects?
This can be achieved using haptic interfaces or haptic devices such as haptic force gloves
What is mocap technology?
Motion capture technology uses high-speed infrared cameras to track light placed at strategic points
Convert the movements in 3-D space to corresponding changes on a 3-D skeleton model
This is commonly used when animating CGI movies
