What does multiple role theory suggest?
Multiple Role Theory suggests that it is beneficial to a person’s health to have multiple self-identities.
What is self-concept clarity?
Self-concept clarity is the extent to which self-schemas are clearly defined, consistent with each other and stable across time.
What is the rouge test?
The rouge test is a test delivered to babies to determine whether they have self-awareness. Babies respond to the rouge test at around 18 months.
What brain area is activated when people become self-aware?
The anterior cingulate cortex is activated when people become self-aware
How does self-perception theory suggest people learn about the self? (Bem, 1967)
Self-perception theory (Bem, 1967) suggests that people learn about the self by examining their own thoughts, feelings and behaviours.
What does self-discrepancy theory suggest? (Higgins, 1987)
Self-discrepancy theory (Higgins, 1987) suggests that an individual is aware of the discrepancies between their actual self, their ideal self, and their ought self.
How does regulatory focus theory build from self-discrepancy theory?
Regulatory focus theory builds on self-discrepancy theory. It suggests that people have two distinct regulatory systems - promotion and prevention.
How does the control theory of self-regulation suggest people monitor their behaviour?
Control theory of self-regulation suggests that people test the self against public and private standards and change their behaviour if there is a discrepancy.

Social comparison theory suggests to learn about the self, people compare themselves with others (Festinger, 1954)
How does the self-evaluation maintenance model suggest people maintain self-esteem?
The self-evaluation maintenance model suggests that people are able to maintain their self-esteem when making upward comparisons e.g. by exaggerating the ability of the ‘better’ person

Sociometer theory suggests that self-esteem acts as an internal ‘barometer’ of social inclusion.
