Lecture 2 - Renal Embryology Flashcards
What part of the mesoderm forms the somites?
Paraaxial mesoderm
What part of the mesoderm forms the urogenital system?
Intermediate plate mesoderm
What part of the mesoderm forms the body cavity and coverings?
Lateral plate mesoderm
What is the allantois?
An outpouching of endoderm at the hindgut that extends into the body stalk
What does the body stalk later form?
Umbilical cord
What is the cloaca?
A single posterior opening for a bird’s digestive system, urinary and reproductive tracts and is used to expel faeces and lay eggs
In human embryology, what happens to the cloaca?
Divides to form rectum and anteriorly the urogenital sinus
What drains into the urogenital sinus?
Mesonephric duct
What does the urogenital sinus later form?
Urinary bladder and from its caudal end comes the urethra
Despite how the kidneys develop embryologically
Wk 4 - intermediate mesoderm in neck region becomes pronephros
(pro-nephros = pronephric duct + rudimentary pronephric tubules)
Pronephric duct drains into cloaca
Wk 5 - pronephros degenerates by week 5 (except pronephric duct)
Mesonephros = intermediate mesoderm in lunk region
Pronephric duct becomes mesonephric duct
Mesonephric tubules develop and drain into mesonephric duct
Mesonephros functions as kidney for about 4 weeks
Mesonephros becomes incorporated into gonads
Ureteric bud undergoes repeated branching at its distal end
Stalk becomes ureter, expanded cranial end becomes renal pelvis
The ureteric bud and metanephric mesoderm reciprocally induce each other
What does the metanephros consist of?
A ureteric bud that develops off the mesonephric duct
Metanephric mesoderm
What does the mesonephric tubules come?
Rete testis
What does the mesonephric duct become?
Vas deferens
What does the nephron consist of?
Renal corpuscle + PCT + Loop of Henle + DCT
What does the uriniferous tubule consist of?
Nephron + collecting duct
