Lecture 2 - Plants Around Us Flashcards
Alkaloids
known for psychoactive effects, caffeine, opiate
Aromatic
Coumarins
antithrombotic, anti-inflammatory, and vasodilatory activity
stimulate microphages
used in treatment of vitiligo, eczema, and psoriasis
Essential Oil
Glycosides
sugar moiety + non-sugar portion
remain bio-inactive until hydrolyzed
hydrophilic
ex:
found in cabbage/ mustard family (brassicaceae)
Primary Metabolites
Quinones
responsible for “browning” in fruits/ veggies
Secondary Metabolites
Organic compounds NOT directly involved in basic survival of the organism
ex: attracting pollinators, defense - acorns under oak trees preventing other plant growth
Tannins
ability to “tan” leather, has astringent properties
Terpenoids
responsible for plant fragrance
activity against viruses, fungi, bacteria, and protozoa
flavonoids
phenolic compounds, strongly antioxidant
