Lecture 2 - Osteology Flashcards
1
Q
Bone Function
A
- bones will store/release fat & minerals important for our body
2
Q
Osteoblasts
A
- known as bone builders
3
Q
Osteocytes
A
- are mature osteoblasts
4
Q
Osteoclasts
A
- are bone breakdown cells
- they allow broken bones to rebuild
5
Q
What are the 5 types of Bones
A
- long bones
- short bones
- irregular bones
- flat bones
- sesamoid bones
6
Q
What is the Purpose of Long Bones & What kind of Long Bones are there?
A
- allow us to have height to our limbs
- they have growth plates
- femur, tibula
7
Q
What is the purpose of short bones & where are they located?
A
- provide stability & some movement
- can be called carpal bones
- located in the wrist/hand & ankle region
8
Q
What is the purpose of irregular bones & where are they located?
A
- protect nerve tissue & provide support
- irregular in shape
- located in the chin bone & vertebrae
9
Q
What is the purpose of flat bones & where are they located ?
A
- protect internal organs like the heart, brain, & pelvic organs
- provide protection like a shield
- located in the sternum & scapula
10
Q
What is the purpose of sesamoid bones & where are they located?
A
- relieve tension within our muscles & tendons
- allow for increased weight-bearing
- located in the patella & base of the big toe
11
Q
What is the purpose of Compact Bone?
A
- it provides protection & strength to the bones
12
Q
What is the purpose of Spongy Bone?
A
- helps lessen the weight of a bone while still providing strength
- also allows blood vessel minerals to enter through
13
Q
What 3 sections is the long bone divided into?
A
- diaphysis
- Metaphysis
- epiphysis
14
Q
What is the purpose of diaphysis?
A
- it structurally supports the skeleton
- supports muscular attachment & immune support
15
Q
What is the purpose of Metaphysis?
A
- transfers loads from weight-bearing joint surfaces to the diaphysis
