lecture 2- neck osteology Flashcards
formed by vertebral arch and posterior surface of vertebral body. the succession of vertebral foramina forms the vertebral canal
vertebral foramen
processes of spine
7; spinous process; transverse processes (2); articular processes (4);
cervical vertebrae
c1=atlas c2=axis c3-7; smallest of movable vertebrae ; b/w cranium and thoracic vertebrae
carries the cranium, nobody, anterior arch, anterior tubercle, transverse process projects laterally and are relatively flat.
c1
strongest of cervical vertebrae ; body, transverse process extends lateroinferior
C2 =axis
transverse foramina
vertebral artery goes through c3-c6 but no c7
defines the inferior limit of the neck posteriorly
C7- vertebra prominens
located anteriorly in the next at the level of c3. suspended by muscles that connect it to mandible, styloid process, thyroid cartilage, manubrium and scapula
Hypoid bone, U shape ; 3 parts greater horn, lesser horn, body
only ligament that limits extension
Anterior longitudinal ligament (ALL); strong fibrous band!
limits flexion, weaker, narrower band than ALL , runs within th vertebral canal
Posterior longitudinal ligament; extends from c2 to sacrum
synovial joint b/w superior and inferior articular processes of adjacent vertebrae; allow gliding moving movements
zygapophysial joints
broad, pale yellow band of elastic tissue joining the laminae of adjacent vertebrae
ligamenta flava
pivot joint between dens of C2 and anterior arch of C1
median atlanto-axial joint
movements of cervical portion of vertebral column
rotation, lateral bending, flexion, extension
TMJ
temporomandibular joint
