Lecture 2 Flashcards
What does the phloem transport?
Solutes
What does the xylem transport?
Water
What are the three types of transport in plants?
Enviroment to cell
Cell to cell
Areas of the plant
What are the two main components of the leaf?
Pentiole and lamina
What is the function of the waxy cuticle?
Prevent water loss and gas exchange
What are trichomes?
Hairs that cover the underside of leaves which catch warer, reduce airflow and produce wax
What is symplastic movement?
Movement of water and solutes through the plasmodesmata
What is Apoplastic movement?
Movement of water and solutes through the cell walls and the intercellular spaces
What is an aquaporin?
A small pore forming integral membrane proteins which facilitate the transport of small molecules such as water and gases
Whare are the vascular bundles located in the stem?
Around the edge
Where are the vascular bundles located in the root?
The centre
What is the casparian strip?
It is located in the endodermis of roots and controls movement of water and solutes into the conducting tissues in the root by forming a diffusion barrier
What are the only cells in the lower epidermis of a leaf, which have chloroplast?
Guard cells of the stomata
What type of stomata is common in dicots?
Elliptical stoma
What shape is graminaceous stomata?
Dumbell shaped
