lecture 2 Flashcards
what are genes
Units of hereditary, that contain information that determine specific traits.
why do genes exist as pairs in humans
because human cells are diploid. One chromosome is maternal the other paternal in origin.
how is the inheritance patttern of alleles controlled?
controlled by the process of cell division called meiosis
describe the gametes formed in meiosis
each gamete formed contains only one of each chromosome pair and therefore contains only one of each type of allele ie alleles segregate equally during meiosis.
what do mendles experiment explain
, one allele type was expressed preferentially compared to the other in the penotype
Summary - The inheritance of single genetic traits
Genes exist in pairs, with each pair containing different types called alleles.
Allele pairs separate during gamete formation in meiosis and are inherited randomly.
Alleles can be dominant or recessive based on their phenotypic expression.
Dominant alleles are more evident in the phenotype compared to recessive alleles.
Many human disease alleles are recessive, requiring both alleles to be recessive for expression.
