genetics lecture 6 Flashcards
Autosomal dominant disorders in humans
The normal allele is recessive and the abnormal (disease) allele is dominant
what is the Pedigree pattern for dominant inheritance
Phenotype appears in every generation
Affected parents transmit the phenotype to both sons and daughters
Affected parents can produce unaffected off-spring
what is meant by allele frequency
the proportion of a particular allele (variant of a gene) within a population
what does Homozygous mean
both alleles the same e.g. AA
Heterozygous
alleles different e.g. Aa
homo and hetero
N.B. the dominant allele is usually depicted by a capital letter, therefore homozygous dominant = AA and homozygous recessive = aa
Genotype
the inherited alleles of an individual
Phenotype
the physical characteristics of an individual
