Lecture 2 Flashcards
How are the pressure applied above a solutions and the rate of gas molecules entering the solution related?
P increases = rate of gas molecules entering increases
What is Henry’s Law and what is it used for?
C = kP
C –> concentration of dissolved gas in soln
k –> constant (characteristic of particular solution)
P –> partial pressure of gaseous SOLUTE (ABOVE THE SOLN)
Used to find concentration of a gas
Note: works for solutions where the solute does not dissociate
When the intermolecular forces are strong, how is the change in energy? (delta H)
Positive and large
(tough to separate, so require a lot of energy to separate)
When the intermolecular forces and weak, how is the change in energy? (delta H)
Positive and small
(require small amount of energy to separate)
