Lecture 19- Anxiety and Anxiolytic Drugs Flashcards
What are the psychological symptoms of anxiety?
- Irritability
- Minor depressive symptoms
- Cognitive disturbance
- Fearful anticipation
What are the physical symptoms of anxiety?
- hyperventillation
- sympathetic arousal
- sleep disturbance
- increased muscle tension

- OCD
- Post-traumatic stress disorder
Describe the two parts of Obsessive compulsive disorder?
Obsessions= intrusive/disturbing thoughts.
Compulsions are to try to remove these obsessions e.g. checking, counting

- Physiological symptoms
- Parasthesiae (tingling)

What are the treatments for anxiety disorders?
- Psychological therapy e.g. CBT (time + money)
- Drugs:
a. Beta blockers
b. Antidepressants
c. Barbituates
d. Benzodiacepines
How do barbituates work?
Enhance actions of GABA on GABAA receptors.
When are barbituates used?
Rarely used for anxiety now because effects.
Used for severe insomnia.
What are the side effects of barbituates?
- Highly addictive
- High risk of suicide
- Respiratory depression
- Tolerance develops quickly
Problems with Benzopdiazepines?
-Improvement on barbituates but still a lot of problems.
Addictive, cause dependence, withdrawal can cause anxiety, shakes, dizziness.
Tolerance builds quickly
(usually given in low dose short period of time).
Actions of benzodiazepines?
- reduce anxiety and aggression
- sedate and induce sleep
- reduce muscle tone
- Anticonvulsant
- cause anterograde amnesia
Examples of benzodiazepines?
- Diazepam (valium)
- Chlordiazepoxide (librium)
- Nitrazepam (mogadon)
- Flunitrazepam (rohypnol)
Benzodiazepines mechanism?
Act at GABAA receptor.
Increase opening frequency.
Increase affinity of GABA
