lecture 19 Flashcards
What is the product rule
independent events - events happen separately, probability of one does not affect the other
e.g SsYy x SsYy = ssyy (1/16)
What is the sum rule
mutually exclusive events (a or b) one or other can happen
what does polymorphic mean
2 or more phenotypes - alleles
individuals can only have 2 alleles - one each homologous chromosome
What is incomplete dominance
if F1 has an intermediate phenotype
suggests blending
How can blending be differentiated from blending
if F2 shows the p phenotype then it is particulate inheritance - which maintains variation
What is Co-dominance
both parental phenotypes are present in f1
e.g blood
what are Polygenic traits
Phenotype controlled by many genes that have an additive effect
continuous or quantitative e.g skin colour, weight, height
What is the typical distribution of a polygenic trait
typically normal distribution
What also effects phenotype
environment e.g nutrition, height/weight
