lecture 18 - intro to mendelian genetics Flashcards
What is a locus?
A particular position on a chromosomes, where the genes for a particular trait reside.
What does a test cross determine?
Whether an individual displaying a dominant trait is homozygous dominant or heterozygous.
What is the individual of interest crossed with in order to determine genotype in a test cross?
Homozygous recessive individual.
What are Mendel’s two laws?
Law of segregation, Law of independent assortment.
What does Mendel’s Law of Segregation state?
Genes segregate at meiosis so that each gamete contains 1 gene from 1 parent
What does Mendel’s Law of Independent Assortment state?
That genes assort independently during gamete formation.
What is a mono hybrid cross?
A cross between 2 individuals differing in a single trait.
What are progeny?
Offspring/descendants
What genotype is the “true breeding variety”?
Homozygous
If an individual is a “dihybrid” is it heterozygous or homozygous?
Heterozygous
