Definition of counseling
Effective communication between a pharmacist and a patient concerning the contents, drug to drug interactions, route, dosage form, directions for use, precautions, and effective use of drug or device
Definition of drug regimen review
Retrospective, concurrent, and prospective review by a pharmacist of a patient’s drug related history that includes evaluation of prescriptions or drug orders
What would a pharmacist review in a DRR?
-Allergies, contraindications, appropriate use, and duplicative therapy

What is a pharmacy?
-Facility, department, or other place where prescriptions are filled or compounded
-The principal purpose is dispensing drugs and health supplies intended for the general health, welfare and safety of the public
What is the practice of pharmacy?
-Patient oriented health care profession in which pharmacists interact with and counsel patients and with other health care professionals concerning drugs and devices used to enhance patients wellness, prevent illness, and optimize the outcome of a drug or device
-Compounding, labeling, administering, dispensing, or selling of drugs and devices for the ultimate consumer
-Provision of acts, decisions, and services necessary to maintain all areas of a patients pharmacy related care
-Provision of medication therapy management
Difference between pharmacy and the practice of pharmacy
Pharmacy is the place and practice of pharmacy is what pharmacists do
Can pharmacists administer medications?
Yes as long as that administration follows state and federal laws
What is medication therapy management?
A distinct service or group of services that optimize therapeutic outcomes for individuals
What actions are considered medication therapy management?
-Performing or obtaining assessments on an individuals health
-Formulating a medication treatment plan
-Selecting, initiating, modifying, or administering medication therapy
-Monitoring patient responses to therapy
-Performing comprehensive medication reviews
-Documenting care delivered and communicating with other healthcare providers
-Educating and training patients on their medications
-Increasing patient adherence through training and support
-Coordinating care with broader health care services
-Providing other patient care services allowable by law
What is a qualifying pharmacist?
-The pharmacist who will qualify the pharmacy by being responsible to the board for the legal operations of the pharmacy under the permit
-Removed from Indiana law but still sometimes shows up in IAC
Who makes up the Indiana Board of Pharmacy?
-One member of the general public who is not at all related to pharmacy
-Five members who are pharmacists in good standing, licensed in Indiana, recognized for ability and experience in varied pharmacy practice settings (at least one has to be a hospital pharmacist)
-One member who is a pharmacy technician
What may the board do?
-Adopt rules (Indiana Administrative Code)
-Refuse to issue, deny, suspend, revoke, or place on probation a license or permit
-Prevent distribution of drugs or devices deemed unfit for use or dangerous to health
-Establish minimum standards of the physical characteristics of a pharmacy
-Subpoena witnesses and schedule a conduct hearings on behalf of the public
What must the board do?
Establish rules for:
-The competent practice of pharmacy
-Pharmacist to counsel patients
-Ensure a pharmacist has an agreement for the return of expired legend drugs and controlled drugs
-The electronic transmission of prescriptions
-The OTC sale of ephedrine and/or pseudoephedrine
What must the board do for an impaired pharmacist?

-Immediately report to the board any pharmacist the program believes constitutes an imminent danger to the public or themselves

What is a pharmacist intern?
A person who is:
-Permitted to practice pharmacy under the supervision of a pharmacist
-A graduate of an accredited college or has established equivalent education and is obtaining experience as a requirement for licensure
-A qualified applicant awaiting examination for licensure
-An individual participating in a residency or fellowship
What is a pharmacy technician?
An individual who works under the direct supervision of a pharmacist to assist the pharmacist with clinical activities that do not require the professional judgement of the pharmacist
What must a pharmacist intern applicant demonstrate?
-They are actively enrolled in an ACPE accredited college of pharmacy
-Has obtained a Foreign Pharmacy Graduate Examination Committee Certificate (FPGECC) or
-Are awaiting examination for licensure as a pharmacist
How long is a pharmacy intern license valid?
Registration is valid for 1 year and may be renewed so long as the fee is paid and ACPE enrollment or FPGECC proof can be demonstrated (expiration date is September 30th of each year)
