Sacrum
formed by the fusion of five, originally separate vertebrae and is located at the base of the lumbar vertebrae connecting to the pelvis
Ala
large triangular surface on either side of the sacral base, continous with the iliac fossa
Promontory
projecting anterior edge of the body of the first sacral vertebrae
Anterior sacral foramina
openings in the sacrum on anterior side (holes) through which the anterior divisions of the sacral nerves and the lateral sacral arteries pass
Lateral mass
part of the bone formed by the expanded transverse processes and the vestiges of the sacral ribs
Auricular surface
forms the sacral contribution to the articulation between the sacrum and os coxae
Median crest
formed by the fused spinous processes
Intermediate crest
formed by the fused articular processes
Lateral crest
formed by the fused tips of the transverse processes
Sacral hiatus
inverted U-shaped, comes to be from the absence of the laminae and spinous processes of the S4 & S5 vertebrae
