Lecture 16, Pelvis & Female vs. Male Flashcards
Pelvis
the pelvis is the part of the trunk inferoposterior to the abdomen and is the area of transition between the trunk and the lower limbs
Greater pelvis (light green)
- superior to the pelvic inlet
- bounded by the abdominal wall anteriorly, the ala of the ilium laterally, and the L5 and S1 vertebrae posteriorly
- the location of some abdominal viscera
Lesser pelvis (dark green)
- between the pelvic inlet and pelvic outlet
- the location of the pelvic viscera - urinary bladder and reproductive organs, such as the uterus and ovaries
- limited inferiorly by the musculomembranous pelvic diaphragm
Iliac crest
rim of the ilium
Iliac fossa
a large depression on the anteromedial aspect of the flat, fan-shaped upper part (ala or wing) of the iliac bone (ilium)
Ala of ilium
represents the spread of the fan
Sacro-iliac joint
link the pelvis and lower spine (closer to the middle)
Anterior superior iliac spine
bony projection of the iliac bone, refers to the to the anterior extremity of the iliac crest of the pelvis and provides attachment for the inguinal ligament and the sartorius muscle
Pelvic inlet
the anatomical limit between the true pelvis below and the false pelvis above (a way to differ between male and female pelvis)
- line near the hole
Pubic arch
is formed by the ischiopubic rami (conjoined inferior rami of the pubis and ischium of the two sides), the rami meet at the pubic symphysis
Hip bones
two large, irregularly shaped bones, each of which forms at puberty by fusion of three bones - ilium, ischium and pubis
- the hip bones are joined at the pubic symphysis and to the sacrum posteriorly at the sacro-iliac joints to form a bony ring, the pelvic girdle
Ilium
superior flattened, fan-shaped part of the hip bone
Ischium
has a body (form the posterior part of the acetabulum) and a ramus (forms the posterior part of the inferior boundary of the obturator foramen)
(paired bone of the pelvis that forms the lower and back part of the hip bone)
Pubis
is an angulated bone that has a superior pubic ramus (which forms the anterior part of the acetabulum) and inferior pubis ramus (forms the anterior part of the inferior boundary of the obturator foramen)
Acetabulum
the cup-shaped depression on the external surface of the hip bone with which the head of the femur articulates
