What are the responsibilities of Director, Research Innovation?
• Identify new collaboration and licensing opportunities for the CSL Research portfolio
• Establish strategic partnerships with academic institutions globally
• Lead Research due diligence assessments of new partnership opportunities
Work with Global Licensing team to facilitate agreement execution for collaboration and licensing opportunities that pass Research due diligence
What is Licensing?
• A common type of partnership in pharma/ biotech
• The granting of permission to use intellectual property rights (eg. Patents, technology) under defined conditions (license agreement)
• Mutually beneficial arrangement
• Often enables parties to achieve a shared goal, which neither party could achieve as effectively alone
• Typically involve an upfront payment, milestone payments and royalties
Therapeutic area and stage can both influence deal value
What is a Joint Venture?
when two or more parties create a separate company by jointly funding it and managing it while sharing in its profits and losses. JVs are often used by companies to gain entry to foreign markets
What are Mergers and Acquisitions?
When one company acquires another company. Acquired company no longer effectively exists and all its assets/ IP are now owned by the acquiring company
What is a contract research?
A fee for service arrangement. One company pays another to conduct a specific service or piece of research. Any IP generated is typically owned by the company paying for the research
How do you find the right partner to commercialise a discovery?
- Identify lead indication/ therapeutic area
- Identify/ ensure unmet need
- Identify potential partners
- Pitch opportunity to potential partners
- Negotiate and execute License Agreement
- Actively manage partnership for success
