Lecture 15 - High Yield Flashcards
What are the layers of the scalp?
Skin, Connective tissue, Aponeurosis (frontalis, occipitalis), Loose areolar tissue, and Pericranium (periosteum)
What are the branches of the external carotid artery?
Occipital, posterior auricular, and superficial temporal
What are the branches of the internal carotid artery?
Supratrochlear and supraorbital
What provides blood supply to the brain?
2 internal carotid arteries and 2 vertebral arteries
What is the function of the Circle of Willis?
Interconnects the internal carotid and vertebral system to create alternative routes for blood flow in case of blockage
What are the components of the Circle of Willis?
Posterior cerebral arteries, internal carotids/middle cerebral arteries, anterior cerebral arteries, anterior communicating artery, and posterior communicating artery
What blood vessels supply the meninges?
Anterior meningeal arteries, middle meningeal artery, emissary veins, diploic veins, and cerebral veins
From superficial to deep, what are the meninges and spaces?
Epidural space (absent around the brain), dura mater, subdural space, leptomeninx (arachnoid membrane, arachnoid vili, pia mater)
From superficial to deep, what are the spinal cord meninges?
Epidural space (contains epidural fat and internal venous plexus), dura mater, arachnoid mater, subarachnoid space, pia mater, denticulate ligaments, and filum terminale (extension of dural sac from conus medullaris to coccyx)
What is the flow of CSF?
Choroid plexuses -> ventricles -> through apertures -> into subarachnoid space -> through arachnoid vili -> into dural venous sinuses -> into internal jugular veins
