Lecture 15 and 16: Folliculogenesis and the Estrous Cycle Flashcards
Major Feedback Event in Diestrus Stage
follicles grow but no ovulation occurs becuase of the negative feedback of progesterone on the GnRH surge center
the corpus luteum, however, is a transient gland and will be destroyed after luteolysis
Major Feedback Event in estrus stage
frequency of GnRH pulses increases gradually with the (+) feedback of estradiol in the surge center, leading to a surge in GnRH
pattern of LH secretion follows a pattern of GnRH secretion and a surge in LH also occurs
the preovulatory surge of LH causes ovulation lf large dominant follicles
Recruitment
dependent on FSH
Selection
dependent on acquisition of LH receptors in the granulosa cells
Dominance
dependent on LH
Functions of Progesterone
negative feedback on hypothalamus and pituitary
negative feedback on uterine muscle contraction –> ensure implantation
positive feedback on histotroph secretion and general activity of endometrium
