Lecture 14- Somatosensory pathways from receptor to brain Flashcards
what are skin mechanoreceptors?
they are an important receptor class for the somatosensory system
what are the two types of skin that have mechanoreceptors?
hairy skin
glabrous skin (ex. skin on your palms, hairless)
what 4 receptors does the glabrous skin have?
meissner’s corpuscle: detects light pressure on skin
merkel disk receptor: allows us to detect slow pressure and texture
ruffini ending: detects stretch of the skin
pacinian corpuscle: deforms nerve ending and requires pressure to activate
what are the two receptors that hairy skin has?
bare nerve ending: detects temperature
hair receptor
what is the sensory pathway for fine touch vibration proprioception?
spinal cord –> brainstem –> thalamus
how do temperature receptors work? what are their ion channels called? where are they found?
they are a family of ion channels called TRP channels
found on free nerve endings
are there more cold or warm receptors?
cold
what are nociceptors? where are they found?
pain receptors found in bare nerve endings
what are the 3 different ways nociceptors may be activated?
by strong noxious stimuli that may damage tissue
by extreme temperature
TRPV2 chennels and GPCR may cause graded potentials in nociceptors
what are the 3 different types of axons (fibres) that carry pain?
A-beta (medium myelinated, fast pain)
A-delta (small myelinated, fast pain)
C-fibres (small unmyelinated, slow pain)
what is the sensory pathway for nociception temperature?
spinal cord –> thalamus
