Lecture 14 - Metabolism introduction and catabolism Flashcards
Single step pathways
Uncontrolled oxidation occurs, releasing one large burst of energy
Multistep pathways
Occurs in organelles using one enzyme for each reaction, releasing smaller amounts of energy at higher frequencies
Metabolic pathways
Highly regulated
Heat generation
Strong way of producing heat is by simultaneously undergoing glycolysis and gluconeogenesis
Glycolysis:
ATP + fructose-6-P ⇌ fructose-1,6-bisP + ADP
Gluconeogenesis:
Fructose-1,6-bisP + H₂O ⇌ fructose-6-P + ATP
Feed-forward reaction
A metabolite early in the pathway activates an enzyme later in the pathway, reaching the final metabolite quicker
Allosteric
Binds to another point on the enzyme and causes an effect (either activatory or inhibitory)
Protein phosphorylation
Protein phosphorylation - protein kinase
Protein phosphate removal - protein phosphatase
